“An empty lantern provides no light. Self-care is fuel that allows your light to shine brightly.”

Though I have a complicated relationship with Catholicism, sometimes part of my self-care practice includes going to church, something I hadn’t done in months. At Mass today, I reconnected with younger versions of myself, as I’ve experienced the prayers, the readings, the homilies and the familiar structure on and off throughout my life. For me, going to church can provide a sense of stability, especially welcome during uncertain times.

Social distancing and required masks made the experience different, of course. I missed the “Peace be with you” part where we normally reach out to shake hands, to connect. Still, the opportunity to quietly reflect in a room filled with light beaming through stained glass filled and refueled me.
