“The song is ended, but the melody lingers on.” – Irving Berlin

After someone leaves our lives, we are often unexpectedly reminded of them—a song on the radio, the scent of the perfume they wore, or a person resembling them at the grocery store.

Our family is grieving the loss of a young man in our lives. At his burial service on Friday, a speaker shared a story of how taken he was when they discovered a rainbow last summer, so much so that they stopped their car to savor the view.

A few hours after the burial service, rainbows stretched across the sky, sparking in me the feeling that he is at peace now, shining brightly in heaven. I suspect that rainbows will forever evoke for me his memory.
